What does a railway medical involve? ›

The Network Rail Medical assesses an individual's general health, body mass index, visual acuity (sight), colour perception, visual field, mobility, coordination, and hearing. The results of these tests are combined to give an indication of fitness for work, and a suitable medical level is given.

Safety Critical

A fail on these tests may result in the employee's PTS certificate being cancelled. The drug and alcohol aspect of the medical is repeated annually. Drug Test – completed from a sample of urine.

How much does a PTS Medical cost? A PTS Medical only at our Birmingham site costs £70 per candidate.

How often must a train driver have a medical examination? 1.1 Train drivers must pass the initial medical examination to get a licence and then have a periodic medical examination at least every 3 years up to the age of 55.

The PTS Card is a qualification that you get through Network Rail as an employee of a rail engineering company with an allocated sponsor. The card is issued by Network Rail's chosen identity card scheme called Sentinel and is valid for 5 years.

Personal Track Safety - Initial - E-learning Course

The E-Learning programme takes up to three and a half hours to complete and concludes with a short online exam that needs to be completed by the individual.

Sentinel card is a simple and secure way to check that everyone working on the railway has completed the relevant training and qualifications.

What happens if I lose my Sentinel card? ›

If your card has been lost or stolen, please report this immediately to your Sponsor. A Sentinel Sponsor Administrator will need to record the loss of the card in the database and order a replacement for you. If the card is cancelled when a replacement is ordered, the card can no longer be used.
