Can I use an expired passport as ID? ›

Q: Can I use an expired passport as proof of identity? A: Yes. An expired passport can be used instead of a birth certificate as proof of citizenship in some situations, such as when renewing a passport.

You cannot use an EU , EEA or Swiss national ID card to enter the UK unless you: have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, or Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man's settlement schemes. have an EU Settlement Scheme family permit, or the equivalent from Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man.

As an EU national, you have the right to travel to any EU country with a valid passport or ID card. Your non-EU family members may need an entry visa, depending on their nationality.

National identity cards are issued to their citizens by the governments of all European Economic Area (EEA) member states except Denmark, Iceland and Ireland.

My passport is expired, is there a grace period to renew it? Yes, you have five years from the expiration date to renew your passport as long as it was a 10-year passport (does not include temporary or child passports).

Birth certificates are not evidence of identity, and are easily obtained. Although certificates issued at the time of birth may give more confidence that it belongs to the individual, unlike a recently issued certificate, they will not show if any information has been corrected or superseded by a new registration.

Can I fly without passport? ›

You must present an acceptable ID, such as a valid passport, state-issued enhanced driver's license or U.S. military ID, to fly within the U.S. You will not be allowed to fly if your identity cannot be verified.

Entry. EU citizens are entitled to travel to any other EU country without any special formalities. In order to travel to other EU countries, travellers simply have to possess and carry a valid passport or a valid ID card.

Can I exit the UK using the ID card? Yes. However, the ID document must be accepted for entry at the country of destination. Therefore, if you wish to leave the UK using a national ID card you must check that the country you are travelling to will allow you to enter using a national ID card rather than a passport.

Citizens of the Member States of the European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland may enter Spain with their national identity card or valid passport. Minors travelling with an ID and unaccompanied by a parent will need the authorisation of one of the parents.

The vast majority of all passport applications are being dealt with well within 10 weeks. However, a passport can only be issued once all the checks have been completed satisfactorily and will take longer if applications are submitted with missing or incomplete information.

Yes. You can renew both passport books and cards online. Please note if you have a passport book and want a passport card only, OR if you have a passport card and want a passport book only, you cannot renew online.

How can I prove my identity? ›

You can visit the UK as a Standard Visitor for tourism, business, study (courses up to 6 months) and other permitted activities. You can usually stay in the UK for up to 6 months. You might be able to apply to stay for longer in certain circumstances, for example to get medical treatment.

Travel to England rules

You should get a decision on your visa within 3 weeks once you attend your appointment at the visa application centre, if you are applying for a visa to visit the UK: for a holiday or to see family or friends. for a business trip or meeting.

Can I use expired passport as ID UK? ›

In some circumstances yes. For example, if the passport is being used to show that the individual is a British or European citizen, the passport does not need to be current.

Document Rules

All documents have to be valid; you can't use a passport which has expired, or a driving licence which has been withdrawn because you've racked up too many points. You also need to present the originals of all of your documents. Photocopies or photographs cannot be accepted.

You can use a UK birth, adoption or naturalisation certificate, but you must send it with one of the following: National Insurance card, or a letter from the Department for Work and Pensions or HM Revenue and Customs showing your National Insurance number - find your National Insurance number if you've lost it.

Acceptable personal identification documents include:

A current UK or European photo-card driving licence. UK full or provisional photo-card driving licence. A national ID card and/or other valid documentation relating to immigration status and permission of work.

If you don't take your old passport to a professional to have it disposed of, make sure that you COMPLETELY DESTROY the document before you throw it away.

Passports and ID cards. If you're travelling on an international flight, you'll need a passport or an equivalent travel document that is valid for the full duration of your trip. Your children will also need their own passports, even infants under two years.

It usually takes around 14 days but it can take longer if: the details given for the check are incorrect.

What can I use instead of passport? ›
