Two-fifths of Aussies (40%) watch and prefer streaming services more than they watch free-to-air and cable TV, with the number higher for younger age groups.

The uptake rate for streaming is high and the unsubscribe rate is low:

  • Just 6% of users want to unsubscribe from a service but never get around to it, while just 6% believe their social life has suffered because of streaming.
  • Luckily, arguments on what to watch are few and far between, with just 4% of respondents to our survey admitting to arguing with their partner over what to watch.
  • Average monthly spending on streaming services increased slightly to $45 – compared to $42 last year – which indicates that Aussies are either paying for multiple streaming services or have some deluxe channel packs added on.
  • 26% of respondents indicated that they have two streaming subscriptions, 18% have three, 10% have four and 6% have five or more, with younger age brackets more likely to have multiple subscriptions.
  • Only 8% of respondents have subscribed to a Pay TV service through an internet or mobile phone plan, compared to 20% last year.

Streaming frequency & devices

Australian Pay TV & Streaming | Best Streaming Services - Canstar Blue (34)

The majority of Aussies (56%) tune into a streaming service every single day, our survey found. About a third (31%) tune in a few times a week, while 6% said they only log in on a weekly basis.

When it comes to which devices are favoured for streaming, it seems the good old living room television is still the main go-to, with 83% using their TV for streaming. Almost a third (29%) use their phone, 25% use their laptop, 19% their tablet, and 11% the computer.

Almost half of respondents to our survey (47%) said that their streaming services are worth the money. If you’re one of these people, that’s awesome. But if you’re not happy with the value you get, don’t go on paying for something you don’t use, even if it is just a few dollars a month. And don’t forget about the free trials, as you may find it a great way to try before you buy.
